2010 Australian Superbike Calendar released to mixed response around the country
Western Australian race fans are somewhat accustomed to being left off the Australian Superbike calendar but South Australians are also now up in arms over being left on the outer after the 2010 Australian Superbike Championship calendar was released this week.
The Australian Superbike Championship will also not visit NSW in 2010 and the popular Winton (VIC) event has also been left out of the calendar. Difficulties trying to book tracks that are managed by those involved in the rival FX series contributing to the lack of NSW rounds and Winton rounds perhaps but still it is hard to fathom the national series not visiting Australia’s most populous state.
Very happy about the calendar however are Territorians. The Northern Territory News newspaper splashed its front cover today with the news of the April 8-11 round at Hidden Valley.
Queenslanders also do well this year with two rounds scheduled at Willowbank, a circuit layout generally loathed by riders but greatly supported by spectators and generally well renowned for producing excellent racing.
The official calendar lists seven rounds but only six rounds feature the premier Superbike and Supersport categories as round four at Broadford is a double header round for the support categories of Superstock 1000 & 600, Sidecars, 125/250 GP Mono and Junior classes.
The series kicks off late in February as a supporting act to the World Superbikes at Phillip Island over the Feb 26-28 weekend. Next stop on the schedule is the long trek to Darwin in early April.
After a two month break the Superbikes then head to Qld Raceway for round three on the first weekend in June.
Broadford then hosts the minor categories only on the first weekend in July.
The Superbikes then return to Qld Raceway for round five.
The final two rounds of the 2010 Australian Superbike calendar has the Superbikes providing a supporting act to the V8 Supercar Championship. The penultimate round on the Superbike calendar is at Phillip Island from September 10-12 as part of the V8 Supercar L&H 500. The Superbike finale will be played out in Tasmania on the weekend of November 7 as a supporting act to the V8 Supercar Falken Tasmania Challenge.
The regular Superbike support races at the October MotoGP round are also missing from the 2010 ASC calendar and it is yet unclear what, if any, support events will feature at the 2010 Australian MotoGP which is scheduled for the weekend of October 17.
