Howard Ford/Lee Menzies crowned F1 Sidecar Champions

Mick Alton/Christine Clancy win F2 Sidecar Championship


The 2018 Horsell Consulting F1 & F2 Australian Sidecar Championship has been wrapped up at Phillip Island Round 7 of the ASBK, with Howard Ford/Lee Menzies and Mick Alton/Christine Clancy wrapping up their Championships in style.

The weekend’s three races saw David Boughen/Robbie Shorter take dominant form, winning all three races but would see Ford/Menzies win the F1 class by 16 points from Boughen/Shorter with the teams on 243 and 227 points respectively. Third overall in the F1 standings leading Philip Island was Brown/Sheldrick.

In the F2 class Mick Alton/Christine Clancy closed out their season with a 47 point lead from the Goodale/Goodale team, while Clancy/Grubb closed out the F2 championships top three.

F1 & F2 Australian Sidecar Championship Race 1

Race One started at 4:00pm in the afternoon after David Boughen / Robbie Shorter took pole position in the morning’s qualifier with a 1:47.231.

Taking the victory would be Boughen/Shorter with Howard Ford/Lee Menzies a further 13 seconds back. Mick Alton/Christine Clancy were the first of the F2’s, 17.315 seconds off the leaders in third overall.

F1 Sidecars class leaders David Boughen/Robbie Shorter were delighted in their result today winning F1 class and outright for Race One.

“We tried to get Howard Ford and Lee Menzies to push us hard! We love the fast-flowing corners here at Phillip Island and its hard work on the passengers.”

F2 Sidecars Race winners Mick Alton/Christine Clancy were victorious the F2 class.

“I’m giving away 60 odd horsepower, so I was very surprised when I was able to pass the Western Australians, Graeme Evans and Jarrod Scott. There were some really close moments out there!”

F1 & F2 Australian Sidecar Championship Race 2

David Boughen/Robbie Shorter took another dominant victory in race two. The duo were pumping in the fastest laps and were simply unstoppable on their LCR Suzuki. Shorter even managed to pull off a handstand on his sidecar to show off to the crowd on the cool down lap.

Howard Ford and Lee Menzies emulated their second-place finish in race one, this time being 13 seconds behind the race winner to further extend their title credentials.

The first of the F2 finishes was Mick Alton and Christine Clancy. Their victory for their respective championship also managed to seal the F2 title and they were elated on the podium to secure the title. This would be the fourth championship in a row for Alton and the third for Clancy.

Boughen and Shorter have taken another commanding 19 second win but it would not be enough to take the championship as Howard Ford/Lee Menzies took out the title with their second-place finish being enough to seal the deal

“We knew we weren’t to be able to overtake Ford and Menzies in the Championship but we’re very pleased to take the win. This is actually our last race and I’ll be retiring, so great to go out on a high!”

Alton and Clancy once again managed to take the win for the F2 class to make their championship win even sweeter.

In the F1 Championship Ford/Menzies took the spoils ahead of Boughen/Shorter and Jeff Brown/Darren Sheldrick finished third in the standings. In F2, Alton/Clancy were declared the champions ahead of Richard Goodale/Scott Goodale and John Clancy/Warren Grubb in third.
