Rounds One and Two
Five Pro 450 winners, but Dunker owns AFTN opening weekend
Cameron Dunker made an emphatic start to the 2026 Yamaha Aussie Flat Track Nationals by winning both rounds of the season-opening Maryborough double-header, emerging from two days of close and unpredictable Pro 450 competition with an 18-point championship lead.
The Yamaha YZ450F rider did not dominate every race. In fact, five different riders shared the nine Pro 450 race or split-race victories across the weekend. Dunker instead built his advantage through relentless consistency, recording a 1-4-2-2 scorecard on Saturday before going 2-2-1-1-2 around Sunday’s TT circuit.
That amounted to eight podium finishes from nine scoring starts, with fourth his worst result. Dunker’s 403 championship points also came without either of the five-point Superpole bonuses, which went to Max Whale on Saturday and Riley Nauta on Sunday.
Maryborough’s Action Park presented two distinctly different challenges. Saturday was conducted on the traditional flat track layout, while Sunday incorporated the jump and more technical changes of direction associated with the TT circuit.
Rounds One and Two – Over 35s
The premier Pro 450 field was joined by Junior Lites, Junior 85, Pro Women and the two new-for-2026 classes at opposite ends of the age spectrum: All Powers Over 35s and 65 Trackers.
Round One – Flat Track – Saturday
Pro 450
Returning American Flat Track campaigner Max Whale immediately demonstrated his speed by taking Superpole aboard the KTM 450 SX-F. Whale stopped the clock at 31.439 seconds, with the six Superpole contenders covered by less than half a second.
Dunker had qualified eighth overall and started the opening race from the second row, but wasted little time moving forward. Ronan Jacobs led the first three laps before Whale moved ahead on lap four, with Dunker steadily closing behind them.
Whale still held a narrow advantage beginning the final lap, but Dunker produced his fastest lap of the race when it mattered most. His 30.945-second final circuit carried him into the lead and secured victory by just 0.117 seconds. Daniel Wicks completed the podium after running among the leaders throughout the six-lap contest.
Cooper Archibald then put the new Ducati Desmo 450MX into the AFTN winner’s circle for the first time. Archibald led every lap of the second race, set its fastest lap and resisted Ronan Jacobs to win by 1.284 seconds.
John Lytras worked his way forward to third, while Dunker recovered from seventh at the end of the opening lap to finish fourth. Billy Ryan and Whale completed a top six separated by only 3.404 seconds.
The third race produced the closest finish of the day. Lytras moved into the lead on lap three and appeared to have the contest under control, but Dunker was mounting a charge after completing the opening lap in ninth position.
Dunker reached third with five laps remaining and began the final circuit 0.891 seconds behind Lytras. He gained almost the entire margin on that last lap, but Lytras held on by just 0.053 seconds. Whale crossed the line another 0.495 seconds behind Dunker to complete a tightly packed podium.
Riley Nauta underlined the depth of the field by setting the fastest lap of that 15-lap race while running through the leading group, although his eventual result was seventh.
Archibald completed his impressive Saturday by again leading every lap of the fourth race. The Ducati rider also recorded the fastest lap on his way to a 0.829-second victory over Dunker, who displaced Whale from second late in the contest.
Whale finished third and Lytras fourth, with the leading quartet covered by only 2.464 seconds.
Dunker’s combination of one victory, two second places and a fourth earned him the Round One win on 198 points. Archibald was second on 187 after his two race victories, Whale scored 185 and Lytras completed a remarkably close leading group on 182.
“That was unreal,” Dunker said. “To start it out with a win like that in race one was unbelievable. There are a lot of champions here this weekend and starting on the second row wasn’t easy for me.
“I got beat up a little bit at times, but that’s how it is. It will teach me to qualify better.”
Junior Lites
The latest chapter in the rivalry between Jed Fyffe and Neiko Donovan was one of the highlights of Saturday’s program.
Fyffe qualified fastest and won three of the four races, but his most impressive performance may have come in the one he did not win. After crashing in race two, Fyffe remounted and worked his way back through the field to finish second behind Donovan.
Ryke Haller occupied the remaining podium position in three races, while Beau Baker claimed the other third place during a promising transition from the Junior 85 ranks.
Fyffe ended Saturday on 220 points, 15 ahead of Donovan, with Haller third on 176.
Pro Women
Grace Hudson could hardly have made a more convincing AFTN debut. The KTM rider qualified fastest and won all four races to collect every available point from the opening round.
Ruby James and Lori Gow were Hudson’s closest challengers and remained on the podium throughout the day, while Latiya Hyde and Katarna Robinson produced consistent performances immediately behind them.
Hudson was also mindful of the deteriorating surface as the program progressed.
“The track was getting rougher and we had to ride to the conditions,” Hudson said. “I didn’t come down though!”
Junior 85
Brody Ford converted three race victories into the Junior 85 round win, although the class produced no shortage of potential challengers.
Flynn Beard had qualified fastest and was running strongly in the opening race before a heavy crash interrupted his day. Beard returned to the podium in the final two encounters, while George Holmkvist and Kru Tulloch remained consistent enough to complete the overall top three behind Ford.
Holmkvist carried his strong form from the previous season into the opener, while Tulloch’s Saturday performance would prove an important foundation for what followed on the TT circuit.
65 Trackers and All Powers Over 35s
The two new classes introduced for 2026 made an encouraging debut at Maryborough.
Hudson Raffin emerged on top in 65 Trackers after winning two races and finishing second in the other. Harley Ford had qualified fastest and won the opening encounter, while Kade Wilesmith and Hux Davies also collected multiple podium results.
At the other end of the age scale, Glenn Smith and Ajay Muggleton shared the victories in All Powers Over 35s. Smith’s consistency and fastest qualifying performance gave him the round win by 12 points over Muggleton, with Jason Griffin third.

2026 AFTN Round Two
TT – Sunday
Pro 450
Sunday’s TT circuit changed the demands placed on the Pro 450 field, but did little to spread out the leading contenders.
Riley Nauta produced the first surprise by beating Dunker to Superpole by only 0.015 seconds. Whale was third, while barely more than one second covered all six Superpole riders.
Whale then made a perfect start to the racing program, leading every lap of the opening six-lap sprint. Dunker stayed within striking distance and recorded the fastest lap of the race on the final circuit, but Whale crossed the line 0.815 seconds ahead. Lytras was third, with Nauta fourth.
The second race developed into an even closer contest between Whale and Dunker. Whale led the opening lap by just 0.008 seconds before Dunker moved ahead by a single thousandth of a second at the completion of lap two.
Whale reclaimed the lead on lap three and controlled the remaining laps to win by 0.736 seconds. Nauta finished third, with Lytras fourth and Jacobs fifth.
The third contest introduced a different test, with riders facing two eight-lap races separated by a break of only three minutes.
Nauta led the opening lap of the first half before Whale moved ahead, but Dunker took control on lap three and won by 0.832 seconds. Whale was second and Lytras third.
Whale again made the better start in the second half and led the opening four laps. Dunker remained close, took over on lap five and held off Whale to win by only 0.263 seconds. Lytras again completed the podium, while Billy Ryan improved to fourth.
By winning both halves, Dunker collected the maximum points available from the physically demanding back-to-back format and moved into the lead of the round standings ahead of the final race.
Nauta ensured the weekend finished with another new winner. The ASBK Supersport 300 racer led every lap of the final encounter, set the fastest lap at 27.144 seconds and pulled 2.333 seconds clear of Dunker.
Lytras completed another podium in third, ahead of Jacobs and Whale. It was a decisive breakthrough for Nauta after a mixed Saturday in which he had finished 16th in the opening race before gradually working his way towards the leading group.
Dunker won the TT round with 205 points, only five ahead of Whale. Lytras was third on 181, while Nauta’s Superpole bonus and final-race victory carried him to fourth on 179.
“What an amazing weekend,” Dunker said. “The track was a bit tough there in the end, but everyone ended up making it through all right. It was unreal racing for me and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.”
Series organiser Dave Maddock said the standard of competition had taken another step forward, with Dunker and Whale already establishing what promises to be a season-long contest.
Maddock also singled out Nauta’s performance, noting the difficulty of taking Superpole and a race victory on his Pro 450 debut weekend against such an experienced field.
Junior Lites
Fyffe and Donovan continued their head-to-head battle on the TT circuit, rarely giving each other room across four more races.
Fyffe won the opening three encounters, including a pivotal second race in which Donovan changed his line to negotiate lapped traffic and allowed Fyffe to slip through on the inside.
Donovan responded in the final race as the pair threaded through traffic, claiming his second victory of the weekend and limiting the damage to his championship challenge.
Fyffe nevertheless left Maryborough with six victories from eight races, two second places and both fastest-qualifier bonuses. His perfect 440-point total gave him a 30-point championship lead over Donovan.
Haller remained third in the standings, but only four points now separate him from Tahj Edwards after Edwards put together a consistent run of Sunday podiums.
Pro Women
Hudson completed a flawless opening weekend by again qualifying fastest and winning all four Pro Women races.
The result gave Hudson every one of the 450 points available across the two rounds: eight race wins and both qualifying bonuses.
Maryborough local Latiya Hyde made a significant step forward on Sunday with four runner-up finishes. Ruby James remained second in the championship, but Hyde closed to within five points.
Lori Gow’s day became more complicated after a fall in race two. Gow was able to borrow another motorcycle and continue, salvaging fifth overall for the round.
Junior 85
Kru Tulloch found the TT layout particularly well suited to his riding, qualifying fastest and posting a 1-1-3-2 scorecard to win the round.
Flynn Beard continued his recovery from Saturday’s crash with one victory and three second places, while Cooper Quinn claimed the remaining race win during an impressive first AFTN weekend.
Tulloch’s strong Sunday elevated him into the championship lead on 388 points, 14 ahead of Beard. Ryder Vass holds third on 337 after another consistent weekend.
65 Trackers and All Powers Over 35s
Raffin again won two of the three 65 Trackers races, with Harley Ford taking the remaining victory. Raffin consequently completed the weekend with four wins and two second places from six starts.
Kade Wilesmith earned the fastest-qualifier bonus, while Hux Davies’ consistent podium finishes moved him to third in the championship behind Raffin and Ford.
The All Powers Over 35s produced four different tactical battles. Muggleton won the opener, Smith took the second race and Neil Girdler finished the weekend with consecutive victories.
Smith’s fastest qualifying time and consistent race finishes were enough to secure his second round win. He now leads the championship by 29 points over Muggleton, with Girdler another 21 points behind.
Dunker leads after Maryborough
Dunker leaves the opening weekend with 403 points, 18 ahead of Whale and 40 clear of Lytras.
The numbers underline how Dunker built that advantage. Across nine scoring races and split races, he recorded three victories, five second places and one fourth. Whale collected two wins and seven podium finishes, while Lytras quietly assembled one victory, six podiums and eight top-four finishes.
Archibald’s two Saturday victories demonstrated the immediate potential of the Ducati Desmo 450MX in flat track competition. However, a more difficult run on Sunday dropped Archibald from second after Round One to fourth in the championship.
Nauta sits fifth after progressing from a troubled opening race on Saturday to Sunday Superpole and a dominant flag-to-flag victory in the final race of the weekend.
The Yamaha Aussie Flat Track Nationals now moves south for another flat track and TT double-header at Wodonga’s Diamond Park on August 29-30.
