Crump to kick off title defence in Poland
Australian Speedway specialist Jason Crump will begin defence of his 2009 world championship title at the opening round of the FIM Speedway World Championship, the European Grand Prix, this weekend.
Already a three-time world champion, the 35-year-old Northamptonshire-based rider is not slowing down in his pursuit of what would be a history-making fourth title.
Crump will line up for his 112th GP start when racing gets underway at Alfred Smoczyk Stadium in Leszno, Poland.
He has won the European Grand Prix on two previous occasions, and has a career total of 21 wins since 1996.
Still recovering from a serious injury at the end of last season, Crump and his team have taken every opportunity to test prior to the start of the world championship and he is optimistic about his fitness heading into the event.
“I’ve been practicing at home and abroad, trying to get as much time on the bikes which are new for this season as well as getting used to new carbys (carburettors) which we hope to use for the first GP,” said Crump.
“There have been a few disruptions with matches being cancelled due to unforseen circumstances but in all the results of our pre-season work has been positive.
“I’m recovering well after last year’s injury, my specialists are happy with my progress. I’m at the mercy of time with some aspects of it – there are some things that you can only wait for the body to heal no matter how much technical equipment or treatment is available.
“I’m pleased to be starting the season again and really looking forward to racing. A good start will give me something to build on for the season ahead, as in any motorsport it is all about consistency.”
Jason and his team have remained in Europe since the major air traffic disruption caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland last week, not wanting to risk being stranded in the UK in the leadup to the event.
The 2010 FIM Speedway World Championship consists of 11 individual Grand Prix. As well as competing on the world stage Crump will also campaign an entry in local leagues Wrocław (Poland) and Elit Vetlanda (Sweden).
