All-weather hand protection built for long days in the saddle
Anyone who regularly covers serious distances by motorcycle knows that selecting a touring glove is rarely as simple as choosing between a summer glove and a heavy winter option.
Long-distance riders can encounter cold morning starts, warm afternoons, rain, wind, and rapidly falling temperatures in the same day. The glove therefore needs to provide weather protection without becoming excessively bulky, while still offering the feel and dexterity required to operate the controls properly.
The new FIVE GT1 EVO GTX has been developed for precisely that type of riding. Positioned as FIVE’s premium Grand Touring glove, it combines waterproofing, lightweight insulation and extensive impact protection in a design intended to remain comfortable over long hours in the saddle.
Designed for changing touring conditions
Rather than being conceived solely as an extreme-cold winter glove, the GT1 EVO GTX has been developed as a versatile touring option for the cooler and more unpredictable conditions riders often encounter from spring through autumn.
That makes it particularly relevant to Australian riders tackling cold morning departures, wet highway stages, alpine routes or extended tours where the weather forecast can only tell part of the story.
The upper structure combines stretch nylon with FIVE’s Syntech Skin material, while the palm is constructed from supple full-grain goatskin. Comfort accordions across the fingers and strategically placed stretch materials are designed to allow natural movement without creating unnecessary bulk around the controls.
External finger seams also help reduce the material between the rider’s fingers and the handlebar, contributing to a more natural fit once the gloves have settled in.
GORE-TEX protection without a floating liner
Weather protection is provided by a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX Grip membrane integrated with the palm lining.
That construction is intended to prevent the internal movement sometimes experienced with traditional waterproof glove liners. The membrane remains connected to the palm structure, helping the glove feel more direct when operating the throttle, brake and clutch.
Maintaining that connection between the rider and the motorcycle becomes especially important on long or technical rides, where a thick or loosely fitted liner can make the controls feel remote.
For warmth, FIVE uses 80-gram Primaloft Gold Cross Core insulation across the back of the hand. The insulation incorporates Aerogel technology and is hydrophobic, helping retain warmth while limiting water absorption.
Concentrating the insulation primarily across the exposed upper section allows FIVE to add thermal protection without excessively padding the palm, where additional thickness could compromise feel.
D3O protection throughout the glove
The GT1 EVO GTX also introduces an extensive protection package based around FIVE’s ERGO PROTECH system and D3O impact-absorbing material.
A concealed one-piece D3O metacarpal and knuckle protector uses FIVE’s internal honeycomb structure, while further D3O reinforcements are positioned across the fingers, thumb and forearm.
The thumb reinforcement sits beneath a layer of abrasion-resistant Superfabric, and additional reinforcement is incorporated around the little finger and palm area.
A five-millimetre foam layer provides further protection across the metacarpals, while the GT1 EVO GTX carries a CE KP1 classification.
The result is a glove intended to provide considerably more than basic weather protection, with impact and abrasion resistance treated as integral parts of the touring design rather than secondary considerations.
Touring details that make a difference
Several smaller features have been incorporated specifically for riders spending long days on the road.
FIVE’s Over-Size Cuff System allows the cuff volume to be adjusted so the glove can be worn either over or beneath a jacket sleeve. A water-resistant YKK zip controls the cuff opening, while separate wrist and cuff adjusters help secure the glove in place.
Reflective panels and three-dimensional patches are incorporated across the upper surface to increase visibility when illuminated at night.
A moulded visor wiper is fitted to the left index finger for clearing rain from the helmet visor, while touchscreen-compatible material on both the index finger and thumb allows a phone or navigation device to be operated without removing the glove.
Digital goatskin reinforcement across the palm provides additional grip on the handlebars, particularly when conditions become wet.
Built for the long haul
The challenge with any premium touring glove is balancing several competing requirements. It must keep the weather out, offer meaningful warmth, protect the hand and remain comfortable enough that the rider does not resent wearing it after several hundred kilometres.
FIVE’s answer is not simply to load the GT1 EVO GTX with more insulation. Instead, the glove combines a relatively lightweight thermal layer with a bonded waterproof membrane, supple goatskin palm and strategically positioned protection.
