2026 Australian ProMX Championship

Round One – Wonthaggi

Round one of the 2026 Australian ProMX Championship at Wonthaggi delivered clear early benchmarks across the major classes, with Jed Beaton sweeping MX1, Alex Larwood doing the same in MX2, Lachlan Turner taking maximum points in MXW, Jack Deveson edging Hayden Draper for the MX3 overall, Blake Bohannon opening with an MX85 clean sweep, and the USA winning the FIM Oceania Women’s Motocross Cup.

Kawasaki MX1

Beaton left Wonthaggi as the rider to beat in Kawasaki MX1. Kyle Webster topped the combined qualifying and superpole times with a 1:42.182, just ahead of Beaton’s 1:42.740, but once the gates dropped, it was the Yamaha rider who controlled the round.

Jed Beaton

Beaton won moto one from Dean Ferris and Webster by 49.835 seconds, then backed it up in moto two over Webster and Ferris by 25.348 seconds.

Dean Ferris
Dean Ferris

Webster was classified second overall ahead of Ferris after both riders finished on 42 points, while Todd Waters banked fourth overall with 5-4 results.

Aaron Tanti rounded out the top five.

Jed Beaton – P1

“Great day for the team and I. Since coming back from my injury, there has been a lot of work put in, and it was nice to see it show up at round one. This track is a tough one, so if your fitness isn’t up to scratch or your bike isn’t good, it gets exposed here so, really happy with the work the team and I have done and now we move onto round two and try and do it again.”

Kyle Webster
Kyle Webster
Kyle Webster – P2

“It’s disappointing. I’ve said it before, the rider who makes the fewest mistakes will win, and this weekend I made too many. The positive is we’re in a better position leaving Round 1 than we were last year.”

Todd Waters
Todd Waters
Todd Waters – P4

“I felt good at Round 1! We’ve been working hard on the bike to get it set up for me and we’ve found what I need to be able to ride fast. Moto 1, I was P2 off the start, and there’s Dean [Ferris] and I together, before [Jed] Beaton made quick work of us, and then [Aaron] Tanti got past me. I was on him all moto trying to get him back, but he and I were probably doing the same lap-times – I’d be quite a bit faster than him over the finish area, and then he’d pull from me over the other side of the track, so it was an interesting race. That gave me a little bit of confidence for Moto 2, but my start wasn’t as good, and I sort of came through with some good passes and closed the gap on Ferris, then we came into a heap of lapped riders. I need to be fitter and faster, but overall, it was a good first round for us. I was stoked to get P4 – I wanted a podium, but I let that one slip away from me. I feel alive again and we’re keen to go racing this year.”

Aaron Tanti – P5

“Race one was solid from start to finish, just needed to be a little better at the end as I was in third and would liked to have held onto it but got passed by Webster in the last couple of laps so that was a bit frustrating. Then in race two, I fell off in the second corner and was right at the pack of the bag. I picked up and got going and just tried to work my way forward but also had to be patient as it’s so chaotic back there. I got through top seventh and was able to salvage some decent points for the round. I leave here healthy and well placed in the series, so happy with the start of the year and looking to improve when we go to Canberra for round two.”

Pirelli MX2

Pirelli MX2 produced another double-moto winner, with Larwood converting strong speed all weekend into a perfect 50-point haul.

Alex Larwood

Dylan Walsh had set the pace in Saturday qualifying with a 1:44.848, ahead of Larwood and Byron Dennis, but Larwood won both Sunday motos.

Larwood took moto one from Kayd Kingsford and Walsh, then moto two from Dennis and Walsh.

Dennis was classified second overall ahead of Walsh despite both ending the weekend on 40 points, giving KTM a double podium to open the season.

Kingsford was fourth overall, Noah Ferguson fifth.

“We achieved solid results here at Round 1 of ProMX in Wonthaggi! I’m pretty happy to come away with second place overall – we worked really hard over the off-season, made a lot of improvements, and I’m really happy with where both myself and the bike are. This one feels good and I’m excited to keep pushing throughout the season ahead.”

Dylan Walsh

Dylan Walsh – P3

“It was good to end the weekend on the podium. I wanted more, but I missed the mark a bit on setup for the motos. We ride this track a lot, so I had an idea in my head about how the track was going to be, but it wasn’t that way at all. We’ll make some adjustments for the next one and come out swinging!”

Noah Ferguson – P5

“There was a bit going on over the weekend and I certainly improved my passing skills as I had to come from the back in both motos. But really happy to race it to the end of both motos and get the best points I could on a track that hasn’t been one of my better ones. Thank you the team for their hard work on the weekend and I caused them plenty of grief, but they were on top of things and awesome to have such great support.”

Maxxis MX3

The Maxxis MX3 round was split between the two Monster Energy WBR Yamaha riders, but it was Deveson who came away with the overall.

Jack Deveson
Jack Deveson

Draper won the opening moto from Deveson and Riley Burgess, while Jackson Fuller put his KTM Racing Team machine fifth in that first outing.

Deveson then took moto two from Fuller and Draper, which was enough to secure the round win 47-45 over Draper.

Fuller’s 5-2 scorecard earned him third overall, with Burgess fourth and Heath Fisher fifth.

Jack Deveson, Hayden Draper

Jack Deveson – P1

“While I ride here at Wonthaggi a bit, its not my favourite track or surface to race on so it was good to come away with some good results,” he begins. “The team really ramped up the last couple of weeks and pulled together to get us what we needed and the 1-2 start is a great reward for everyone working behind the scenes.”

Hayden Draper – P2

“Pretty good day all round for me and a great day for the team. I just got caught up in race two and fell so that made things hard, but I did everything I could to get back up near the front and happy to finish for the day in second as that looked impossible 20 minutes earlier,” the Kiwi said.

EziLift MXW

Ezilift MXW belonged to American rider Lachlan Turner, who completed a 1-1 weekend and maximum points.

Lachlan Turner
Lachlan Turner

Turner won moto one from Mayla Herrick and Taylah McCutcheon, then moto two from defending champion Charli Cannon and Herrick.

Herrick finished second overall, Jordan Jarvis was classified third overall ahead of McCutcheon on equal points, and Cannon’s recovery ride to second in moto two limited the damage after her moto one DNF, leaving her 10th overall for the round.

In the accompanying FIM Oceania Women’s Motocross Cup, the USA defeated Australia and New Zealand.

Lachlan Turner – P1

“I made that hard work for myself, didn’t I. I thought the rider was a bit further ahead of me, but she bobbled in the ruts and slowed right down, and I jumped on the brakes to stop, and I ended up stalling the bike. Then I started it and stalled it again. Luckily it started just as Charli was coming around and I was able to get going just before she passed me and I stayed in front of her. I have had such a great time, and everyone here as been so good to me and my family. Everyone at Yamaha has looked after us to well and I can’t wait to come back for the final few rounds later in the year and spend some more time. The team has been perfect and do whatever it takes to give me what I need and Joel my mechanic did an awesome job today,”
