The second round of the 2009 MRRDA Race Series was played out earlier this month at Broadford.
Young Mike Jones (QLD) emerged victorious in the 250 GP Mono category ahead of Adrian Di Giandomeni (VIC) and Lincoln Gilding (QLD). Jones is now level pegging with round one winner Di Giandomeni with the pair tallying 135 points apiece from the opening two rounds.
Jones rode the Moriwaki consistently throughout the weekend to finish in 2nd place overall in the combined 125GP/250GP class.
“I feel more and more confident on the bike each time I go out, and racing at Broadford was terrific as the track suits the 250 really well. I’m extremely happy with my results, coming first in each race for the 250GP mono class was great.”
Not only did Jones dominate the 250GP mono class, but he also set a new lap record in Race two, crossing the line in 61.6 seconds.
“I couldn’t be happier with my track times especially after setting a lap record in Race 2! I know I’ll be able to go even better at Mac Park in July. The team at Motologic have been great. They are really supportive and always available for technical advice.”
Motologic owner, Paul Free couldn’t be more impressed by the shy rider’s results over the weekend.
“Watching Mike develop as a rider is extremely exciting. He is going from strength to strength. I watched from bay 13 at the top of the hill and I could see he was meeting his apexes perfectly lap upon lap. It was fantastic to see, Mike was the only rider that I saw to really get his line through the chicane right, which is a difficult little section of the track. I have no doubt that he will continue to impress.”
Jones will also compete in the new Red Riders Cup established as a supporting act to the 2009 Australian Superbike Championships. Designed as an affordable, entry level category, the Red Riders Cup will give up and coming racers the chance to start their career as part of the top level national Superbike series.
Competitors will all ride strictly controlled CBR 150 machines as sold by series sponsor Honda for $6990. To assist families with much needed support to attend each round, Honda is providing bonus fuel cards to the top three place-getters. Fuel cards in the amount of $250 will go to 1st pace, with $150 awarded for 2nd and $100 for 3rd.
The four round series will commence at QLD Raceway May 29-31.
The MRRDA series also caters for youngsters on 125 Grand Prix machinery and Victorian Adrian Nestrovic took a perfect three from three result at Broadford ahead of Dan Harrison (NSW) and Jack Miller (QLD). Round one winner Jordan Zamora broke his collarbone during the morning warm-up session and took no points from Broadford. Zamora’s misfortune allowed Harrison to secure the series lead on 110 points ahead of Giuseppe Scarcella (NSW) and Nestrovic.
The four-stroke junior wins were shared between Brody Nowlan (NSW) and Corey Schaffer (NSW). Schaffer the only rider to be able to take a win from Nowlan thus far in season 2009 with victory in the final bout at Broadford. Nowlan’s form however sees him the clear series leader with 150 points ahead of the ever consistent Daniel Falzon (SA).
The junior two-stroke category saw Mitch Levy continue his round one form through to Broadford with a win in the opening bout but the NSW rider was denied victory by Hayden Demamiel (VIC) in the final two bouts earned the local the round win. Levy continues to lead the series with a 37 point buffer over Alex Pickett (NSW). Pickett’s title hopes hurt in the opening bout at Broadford when he crashed while battling Levy for the lead in the opening stanza.
A Nippers category also debuted with the MRRDA at Broadford. This class caters for 11-12 year olds on Metrakit 70cc two-stroke machine. Zac Zanesko dominated at Broadford while Josh McGrath and Brandon Demmery had some fierce battles over the remaining rungs on the podium.
The next round of the MRRDA Series will be held at Mac Park (SA) on the weekend of July 5. The series then moves to Queensland’s Morgan Park on August 16 before winding up at Phillip Island on October 4.
The Victorian Junior Road Racing Championship next reconvenes at Winton on the weekend of July 25-26.
