From Perth junior to triple World Champion:
Tai Woffinden raced beneath the Union Jack and retires as the most successful British speedway rider of all time, but Western Australia can claim a meaningful share of his remarkable story.
Born in Scunthorpe, England, Woffinden moved to Perth with his family as a small child and grew up in Ocean Reef. It was in Western Australia that he began learning his craft under his father’s guidance and emerged as one of the country’s brightest junior talents before returning to his British roots as a teenager to pursue a professional career.
That career has now reached its conclusion, with Woffinden announcing his retirement after further hospital scans revealed he requires surgery for injuries sustained in a May 24 crash while racing for Polish club Ostrow.
The latest setback followed the severe injuries Woffinden suffered at Krosno in March 2025, which ruled him out for the remainder of that season and prompted a lengthy rehabilitation.

“After more hospital scans yesterday, I have been told I need surgery following my latest crash in Poland. After a lot of thought, I have come to the decision that it’s time to retire from professional racing.
“To be honest, this isn’t an easy thing to say. For many years, this hasn’t just been what I do, it has been a huge part of who I am as a person.”
The 35-year-old had fought his way back from the devastating 2025 accident and stepped up his preparations for the 2026 season with practice laps in Western Australia earlier this year.
It was a fitting place to restart. Woffinden has retained a strong connection with Perth throughout his international career and has regularly spent the European off-season in WA.
However, his subsequent Ostrow crash and the need for further surgery ultimately convinced him that his body had endured enough.
From a Perth shed to the world stage
Woffinden’s route into speedway began in particularly Australian fashion.
He recalled visiting Daniel and Trevor Harding’s property to ride motocross when he spotted a speedway bike in the shed and told his father Rob that he wanted to have a go.
The motocross equipment was sold, and Woffinden was soon racing speedway. He later recalled that within a week he had lined up in the Australian Under-16 Championship before being paired with future Australian World Champion Chris Holder in a pairs meeting.
Woffinden grew up riding in Perth and won the 2006 Western Australian Under-16 Championship before returning to England at 15 to begin building his professional career.
Pinjar Park also became an important part of the Woffinden family story. Rob Woffinden played a significant role in establishing the venue’s original junior solo circuit, while the annual Rob Woffinden Classic continues to honour his memory following his death in 2010.
Tai later followed his father into the record books by winning the senior Western Australian Solo Championship in 2019. Rob had won the same title during the 1987–88 season.
From 500/1 outsider to triple World Champion
Woffinden made his Speedway Grand Prix debut in 2010 but truly announced himself on the world stage after returning to the championship as a full-time rider in 2013.
Rated a 500/1 outsider by some bookmakers before the season, he upset the established order to claim his first Speedway GP World Championship.
Further crowns followed in 2015 and 2018, making Woffinden Britain’s first and only three-time individual Speedway World Champion.
His Speedway GP career produced 11 round victories, while he also finished runner-up in the World Championship in 2016 and 2020. His success was not confined to individual competition, with Woffinden accumulating domestic, league and international team honours across Britain, Poland and Sweden.
He was also part of Great Britain’s successful 2021 FIM Speedway of Nations campaign, which delivered the country its first world team championship since 1989.

“When I look back, I see five world titles, GP victories, national titles and team championships.
“But more than the trophies, I see the people, the friendships, the laughs, the tough days, the moments that tested me and the moments that remind me exactly why I fell in love with the sport.
“What started as a dream became a life I could never have imagined, and I have been lucky enough to do something I truly loved. I will never take that for granted.”
Family behind the success
Woffinden paid particular tribute to wife Faye and the family members who supported him through the successes, injuries and sacrifices demanded by an international speedway career.

“I have learned that nobody achieves anything on their own. Every step of this journey has been possible because of the incredible people around me.
“To my beautiful family, thank you. Thank you for every sacrifice you have made, for believing in me when I doubted myself and for standing beside me in every high and every low.
“Faye, I could never truly put into words what you mean to me. I simply wouldn’t be here without you.”
He also thanked his mechanics, teams, sponsors, managers, and supporters, acknowledging the many people behind a career at the highest level in one of motorcycle racing’s most unforgiving disciplines.
A lasting Australian connection
Woffinden’s nationality and professional achievements rightly place him among the giants of British speedway, but the rider who conquered the world was shaped during his formative years in Western Australia.
The Perth junior who learned to slide a speedway bike without brakes went on to become a three-time individual World Champion, yet continued to return to the tracks, people, and speedway community that helped launch his career.
His personality, spectacular riding style and willingness to challenge convention also ensured his influence reached well beyond his results sheet.
A developing music career is likely to keep Woffinden in the public eye, but professional speedway racing will now continue without one of its most recognisable and successful figures.
