Aussie MX Championship start signalled with professional launch in Albury
Yesterday, Tuesday March 3, 36 of Australia’s best Motocross riders descended on the Albury Wodonga Motorcycle Club for the official series launch of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship.
With the opening round set to kick off in less than a month it was the perfect opportunity for the top Aussie riders to give locals a sneak-peak at the action coming their way on Sunday April 5th.
Event Promoter, Kevin Williams, said that the support from the local community, club and local governments has been phenomenal and that the first round is shaping up to be massive.
“With such great talent rising through the ranks, the Championship this year looks set to go from strength to strength,” Williams said.
“Local hero and reigning Australian Women’s Champion Kristy Gillespie, has accepted a wildcard entry offer and will line up against the guys in the opening round in four weeks.
“It’s great to see the local politicians get behind the Championship; we had representation from both the Albury and Wodonga City Councils and local MP Bill Tilley and they are all very excited about the event coming to the region.
“The first round looks set to inject around $300 000 into the local economies as well as giving the community the chance to see the Nations best compete in their own backyard.”
Local MP Bill Tilley was thrilled about the event heading to the north-east of Victoria and feels that an event such as this is exactly what the region needs.
“After the recent bushfires and ongoing fire threats, this event is exactly the medicine we need in north-eastern Victoria,” Tilley said.
“This give, not only regional Victoria, but north-eastern Victoria, an opportunity to showcase a signature national event.
“The bush telegraph around our area is a very strong thing, as well as word-of-mouth and from what I’ve seen already at the launch today, the word of the first round will get around.
“I would encourage everyone with an interest or passion for motorcycling to come and see the fantastic sports men and women who are the best in Australia participating in this event.”
The first round of the 2009 Australian MX Nationals will take place at the Albury Wodonga Motorcycle Club on Sunday 5 April.
