Yamaha’s Josh Hayes Completes SuperBike Sweep at Infineon Raceway
Yamaha’s Josh Hayes completed the sweep on Sunday at Infineon Raceway, taking the victory in American SuperBike at the West Coast Moto Jam.
Hayes has now won three of the last four SuperBike features in the Sonoma Valley, including Sunday. He passed race-leader Larry Pegram (Ducati) early on and never looked back, taking the checkers by 3.676 seconds over second-place Ben Bostrom (Yamaha), a Redding native and graduate of Petaluma High School in the North Bay. Pegram held on for third place.
Hayes entered the race weekend fourth in SuperBike points standings, but leaves the Sonoma Valley in third (170).
San Francisco native Jake Zemke (Suzuki) maintained the points lead by just four points over Tommy Hayden (Suzuki), 178-174.
“I felt like I was cheating this weekend, the bike was so good. I felt like I had an advantage,” said Hayes. “It’s still a very difficult course to get around on any motorcycle, mine was just a little bit easier than these boys to get around and it played in my favor. I think we learned a few good things, and I think it will bode well for the rest of the season.”
Hayes led 17 laps of the 22-lap feature and clearly had the best bike in the field. Bostrom placed second for the second consecutive day.
“I think the bike was better than the rider today. I didn’t feel in unison with the bike, I don’t know what’s going on,” said Bostrom.
“I had a blast racing with Larry, which kind of makes my weekend because you live for the fight and want to come out ahead. Everything else is so positive on the team and the bike. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Discovery Bay’s Elena Myers, who became the first female in history to win an AMA Pro Road Race on Saturday, had hoped to make it two straight. Unfortunately, the 16-year-old placed fifth in the SuperSport feature. Roseville’s Cameron Beaubier (Yamaha) took the win in the 18-lap main event, with Huntley Nash (Yamaha) second and Petaluma’s Tyler O’Hara (Yamaha) third.
“It feels awesome. The bike was working great all weekend,” Beaubier said.
