Martín and Ogura gamble on Yamaha’s MotoGP rebuild
Yamaha has made official what had become one of the longest-running open secrets in the MotoGP paddock, confirming Jorge Martín and Ai Ogura will lead the factory team into the championship’s new technical era from 2027.
The announcement follows confirmation a day earlier that Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins will leave the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team at the end of the 2026 season.
That makes this a complete factory rider reset for Yamaha, and a fascinating one at that.
Martín and Ogura are not simply joining Yamaha. They are leaving Aprilia machinery that has become one of the benchmark packages in MotoGP, if not the benchmark package on current form, to join the manufacturer facing arguably the steepest climb back to the front.
It is a bold move from Yamaha, and an equally bold career gamble from both riders.
Martín arrives as the proven title-level recruit, a MotoGP World Champion and multiple Grand Prix winner, albeit a temperamental one; however, he does have the speed and tenacity to drive a project forward. He is not being signed as a development luxury. Yamaha needs him to be a spearhead from day one.
Ogura, meanwhile, arrives with his stock rising sharply. The Japanese rider’s recent turn of speed has shifted the conversation around him from promising prospect to genuine front-running threat. His Dutch TT victory at Assen was a landmark moment, not only as his first premier-class win, but also as the first MotoGP victory for a Japanese rider in more than two decades.
That result also underlined how quickly Ogura has adapted to the front of MotoGP. He is no longer just the tidy, intelligent, long-game rider with a strong junior class résumé. He has now shown the outright pace, racecraft and composure to beat proven winners on a Sunday.
Yamaha has signed both riders for the 2027 and 2028 MotoGP seasons, aligning the new pairing with the major regulation change set to reshape the category from 2027.
The question, of course, is whether Yamaha can give them the tools to justify the move. On the personality front, the two riders could not be more different…
Leaving the front for a rebuild
On paper, the logic is clear. MotoGP’s 2027 technical reset offers a rare opportunity for struggling manufacturers to close the gap. For Yamaha, it represents the chance to step away from the current limitations of the YZR-M1 and build towards a new competitive cycle.
Martín and Ogura are both leaving a package that is currently fighting at the sharp end to join one that has spent recent seasons trying to rediscover its way. That makes the Yamaha move one of the more intriguing gambles of the 2027 rider market.
For Martín, the appeal is obvious enough. He gets factory status, a central role, and the chance to be the rider around whom Yamaha rebuilds its MotoGP identity. If Yamaha gets the 2027 project right, he could be the man who brings the brand back to the top.
For Ogura, the move carries different weight. A Japanese rider in the factory Yamaha MotoGP Team is a significant moment for the brand, but this is no symbolic appointment. Ogura’s recent speed has made him impossible to ignore, and Yamaha will be hoping it has secured him before his value rises even further.
Together, Martín and Ogura give Yamaha two very different but complementary profiles: one established championship-level operator, and one fast-rising talent with both sporting and cultural significance for the company.
Paolo Pavesio, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, said the signings underline Yamaha’s ambition for the next stage of its MotoGP programme.

“Jorge has already proven himself as one of the benchmark riders in MotoGP, with the speed, determination, and mindset to fight for wins and World Championships. We expect him to play a key role in driving our performance forward from day one.
“Ai’s progression over the past one-and-a-half seasons has been outstanding. His talent, work ethic, and potential make us confident he can grow into one of the top riders in the championship. At the same time, we are especially proud to welcome a Japanese rider into the Yamaha Factory Team.”
Quartararo era draws to a close
The incoming reset also confirms the end of one of Yamaha’s most important modern MotoGP relationships.
Fabio Quartararo joined Yamaha’s MotoGP structure in 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the premier talents in the sport. His time with Yamaha has delivered 11 race victories, 32 podiums and, most importantly, the 2021 MotoGP World Championship.
That title remains Yamaha’s most recent MotoGP crown, and Quartararo’s peak years on the M1 were defined by astonishing qualifying speed, precision riding and the ability to extract results even when the package around him was no longer the clear class of the field.
By the time his Yamaha tenure concludes at the end of 2026, Quartararo will have spent eight seasons tied to the brand. Those years have included the great highs of a world title campaign, but also the more difficult development period that followed as Yamaha slipped away from regular victory contention.
Álex Rins joined the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team in 2024, bringing proven race-winning experience and a reputation for technical insight. His time in blue has been shorter and less decorated than Quartararo’s, but Yamaha credited the Spaniard for his contribution to the development of the YZR-M1 project.
Pavesio paid tribute to both outgoing riders while stressing that Yamaha remains committed to extracting the best possible results through to the end of 2026.
“Fabio and Álex have both played an important role in Yamaha’s MotoGP project, and we are very grateful for their efforts, dedication, and collaboration over the years.
“Fabio’s journey with Yamaha spans eight years, during which we have shared both great successes and difficult moments. Together, we have grown, celebrated achievements that have shaped our story, and faced challenges that have strengthened us. Beyond the results, it is this journey that defines our relationship, and in the end, Fabio will always remain one of the true legends of Yamaha MotoGP.
“Since joining Yamaha in 2024, Álex has brought valuable experience, meaningful insight, and unwavering commitment, playing an important role in the YZR-M1 project’s development.
“While saying goodbye is never easy after years together, we remain fully focused on working as a team to achieve the best possible results until the end of the season.”
Yamaha’s biggest roll of the dice
This is the cleanest indication yet that Yamaha sees 2027 as a line-in-the-sand moment.
It is ending the Quartararo/Rins chapter, bringing in a title-winning spearhead in Martín, and pairing him with Ogura at precisely the moment the Japanese rider’s momentum is building.
That makes the 2027 Yamaha project one of the most interesting storylines already forming ahead of MotoGP’s next technical cycle.
The risk is obvious. Martín and Ogura are walking away from the machinery that has them fighting at the front and stepping into the biggest rebuild job in the factory paddock.
The upside is just as obvious. If Yamaha finally gets the new-generation M1 right, it will have a world champion and one of MotoGP’s fastest-rising talents already locked in for the first two seasons of the new era.
After months of paddock speculation, Yamaha’s 2027 line-up is now officially official.
Martín and Ogura in. Quartararo and Rins out. And Yamaha’s most important rebuild in years now has the riders around which it will be judged.
