Inside Sidi’s motorcycle boot development

A proper motorcycle boot must protect, flex, grip, survive years of abuse and remain comfortable enough to wear all day. Meeting all those competing demands requires considerably more than simply wrapping a rider’s foot in leather and armour.

During a visit to Sidi’s headquarters and manufacturing facility in Maser, Italy, MCNews examined how racing feedback, hands-on production, repairability and the changing demands of adventure riders influence the company’s motorcycle footwear.

The feature also explores Sidi’s production methods, the differences between its Italian and Romanian operations, and how models such as the Taurus GTX are developed to balance protection with the comfort and practicality required for long-distance riding.

Larwood survives Kingsford’s QMP charge

Alex Larwood was forced to earn every bit of his first Australian MX2 Championship after a heavy opening-moto crash turned the Queensland Moto Park finale into a genuine title thriller.

Alex Larwood

Honda teammate Kayd Kingsford swept both motos and completed a perfect 50-point weekend, while Larwood recovered to 12th in the opener before riding to a measured second place in the final race. That was enough for Larwood to secure the championship by just seven points, 337 to 330.

The title was Honda’s sixth consecutive MX2 crown, while Kingsford’s dominant finale capped an outstanding rookie campaign in the professional ranks. Larwood now heads to the United States to contest the final three AMA Pro Motocross rounds.

Turner completes the perfect ProMX season

Lachlan Turner could have played it safe at the Queensland Moto Park finale, but that was never likely. The 19-year-old American won both MXW motos to complete a perfect Australian campaign: eight races, eight victories and the maximum 200 championship points.

Lachlan Turner, all smiles after winning the MXW Championship

Taylah McCutcheon scored both holeshots and Charli Cannon led portions of each moto, but Turner’s speed and composure again proved decisive. Cannon finished 2-2 for second overall, while McCutcheon’s 3-3 results were enough to retain championship runner-up by only two points.

Turner became the first American to win an Australian motocross championship since PJ Larsen claimed the Pro Lites title in 2010. She now returns home to complete her US season before heading back to Australia for the Darwin Grand Prix.

Draper crowned as Morrow storms home

Hayden Draper added the 2026 Australian MX3 Championship to the New Zealand title he secured earlier in the year, wrapping up the ProMX crown in the opening moto at Queensland Moto Park.

Seth Morrow

While Draper had done enough to seal the championship, Seth Morrow was again the rider to beat. The Honda youngster won both QMP motos to complete a remarkable run of six consecutive race victories, following his breakthrough sweep at Traralgon and another double at Conondale.

Riley Burgess finished 2-2 at QMP and snatched championship runner-up on 275 points. Morrow surged to third on 273, while early title challenger Heath Fisher slipped to fourth on 271. Just four points covered second through fourth after eight rounds.

Tanti storms to MX1 championship runner-up

Aaron Tanti completed a late-season resurgence with victory at Queensland Moto Park, backing up his Conondale round win with another overall success at the finale.

Aaron Tanti chases Crawford

Nathan Crawford won the opening moto before Tanti struck back in Moto 2. Their 1-2 and 2-1 scorecards left both riders tied on 47 points, with Tanti taking the round victory through his final-race win.

Tanti had arrived at QMP tied with Kyle Webster for second in the championship, but his result carried him nine points clear in the final standings. Together with champion Jed Beaton, he completed Yamaha’s first premier-class championship 1-2 since Jay Marmont and Josh Coppins in 2011.

Waters calls time on a two-decade career

Todd Waters crossed a professional motocross finish line for the final time at Queensland Moto Park, bringing down the curtain on a career spanning two decades.

The emotional weight of the occasion made for a difficult opening moto, but Waters regrouped to finish 10th in the second race. The Queenslander placed 15th overall at QMP and retained fifth in the final MX1 championship standings.

“We’ve won championships and things, but today was bigger than that – it was the end of an era,” Waters said.

2015 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship - Round 11 - Uddevalla, Sweden - Todd Waters and Dean Ferris
2015 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship – Round 11 – Uddevalla, Sweden – Todd Waters and Dean Ferris

His career included two seasons in the MXGP World Championship with Husqvarna, the 2019 Australian MX1 title and the establishment of the Raceline Husqvarna TDUB Racing Team, through which he has helped develop the next generation of Australian riders.

Weaver and Marshall sweep the Vets titles

Luke Weaver and Robbie Marshall gave their rivals little opportunity in the two veterans’ championship divisions, each winning both motos at Queensland Moto Park.

Weaver defeated Mitchell Budd and Raymond Cole in the 30–39 class, going one better after finishing runner-up in 2025. Marshall swept the 40-plus division ahead of Ashley Erbacher and Steven Powell to secure his first Australian championship.

There was also an eye-catching result for Trent Loder and the electric Stark Varg. Loder finished fifth in the opening 30–39 race and third in Moto 2, placing fourth overall on 36 points – just two points shy of the final championship podium.

Thurlby wins the weekend, Madafiglio wins the title

Joe Thurlby completed a perfect MX65 Futures weekend at Queensland Moto Park, winning both motos and collecting the maximum 50 round points.

The championship, however, went to Ryder Madafiglio. A pair of third-place finishes allowed the Husqvarna rider to complete the three-round series on 134 points, nine ahead of Hudson Francis and 12 clear of Thurlby.

Levii Bitic, Madafiglio and Francis all finished the QMP round tied on 40 points behind Thurlby, with their second-moto finishing positions determining the final order.

Stark claims the global enduro sales crown

Stark Future has declared the battery-powered VARG EX the world’s best-selling individual enduro motorcycle after delivering 8124 motorcycles across its range during the first half of 2026. The Barcelona-based manufacturer also reported a 46 per cent increase in revenue to €86 million and its first EBIT-positive six-month period.

It is an impressive result for a company founded only six years ago, although Stark has not released the model-by-model global sales figures, markets or methodology needed to independently verify its world number-one claim.

Stark VARG EX electric enduro motorcycle shown in side profile.
Stark claims the electric VARG EX is now the world’s best-selling individual enduro motorcycle, although the supporting model-by-model global sales data has not been released.

There is also an important distinction between leading sales for one model and leading the enduro market overall. Stark effectively funnels its enduro demand into the VARG EX, whereas KTM and Yamaha spread their sales across multiple capacities and engine configurations. The VARG EX might therefore outsell the KTM 300 EXC or Yamaha WR450F individually, but we highly doubt Stark is selling more enduro motorcycles overall than those manufacturers when their respective model ranges are combined.

We examined the figures, the limitations of Stark’s claim and what its improving financial performance means for the electric motorcycle manufacturer in our full Stark VARG sales and financial analysis.

Six AusProMX riders locked in as MXGP wildcards

Four Australians, Japan’s Souya Nakajima and British-born New Zealander Dylan Walsh will compete as wildcards in the top-flight MXGP class at the final round of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship in the Top End, all eager to make their mark on the demanding Hidden Valley track.

The AusProMX Aussie wildcards are: Jacob Sweet, VIC – KTM; Cooper Holroyd, NSW – Honda; Ryley Fitzpatrick, QLD – KTM; Rhys Budd, QLD – Honda.

All six MXGP wildcards are drawn from the 2026 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX), with Walsh and two-time Japanese 250cc champion Nakajima competing in the MX2 class and the balance in MX1.

Classic racing and camaraderie at Nepean

The City of Penrith Motorcycle Club staged another successful gathering for Classic, Period 20 and Post Classic machinery at Nepean Raceway last weekend.

The racing was fiercely contested, but the camaraderie away from the track was every bit as important. Results might not be the sole reason riders return to this meeting each year, but any suggestion they do not matter disappears as soon as the tapes rise.

Saturday afternoon featured a pair of 25-lap races, one for the Classic machines and another combining the Period 20 and Post Classic categories. Considering the age of many of the motorcycles — and their riders — both races produced a healthy number of finishers.

One of the youngest competitors on the programme, Aaron Fulton, won the Classic enduro ahead of Alexander Grayson and Graeme Judd. Eric Smaller claimed the combined Period 20 and Post Classic 25-lapper from Lee Hunter and Kevin Horton.

Across the weekend, 11 New South Wales Championship classes were decided alongside seven support categories.

The Super Senior racing again attracted plenty of attention, with all competitors aged over 70. Regular visitor Ron Draper made the journey from Queensland’s Whitsunday region worthwhile by defeating Gregg McLean in the Pre ’78 class.

Host club Life Member Philip Gibson won the All Powers category ahead of Stephen Constable and David Lewis, while Maryborough visitor Alexander Grayson was the meeting’s most prolific championship winner with three class victories. Local rider Lee Hunter collected two titles.

Eric Smaller and Graeme Judd each added minor placings to a class victory, with Christopher Jones and Fox Jones also among the championship winners. South Australian regular Robert Hayden, representing the Mud ’n’ Tars club, returned home with three minor placings.

Stephen Constable not only contested the Super Senior class but also joined passenger Bradley Black in the Pre ’85 Sidecar up to 1300 cc category. The pair outpointed the retiring Donna Probin and David Martin combination.

The support programme delivered further victories for Grayson and Gibson, as well as for Benjamin Smaller. Shane Baker scored a Sliders double, while Mark Collins also claimed a class win.

Baja Aragón Trofeo Getac rescheduled to September

Lettenbichler joins Jarvis on seven at Romaniacs

Manuel Lettenbichler has joined Graham Jarvis at the top of the Red Bull Romaniacs record book after claiming his seventh Gold-class victory in the 2026 Unstoppable edition.

Manuel Lettenbichler signals seven after matching Graham Jarvis’s record with another Red Bull Romaniacs Gold-class victory.

The German’s week was not completely trouble-free. A battery problem forced him to stop and work on the KTM during Offroad Day 1, yet he recovered strongly enough to win the stage by seven minutes and 58 seconds over Teodor Kabakchiev.

Lettenbichler eventually completed the Prologue and four Offroad Days in 22 hours, 14 minutes and 41 seconds, defeating Kabakchiev by more than an hour. South African James Moore completed the Gold podium.

Australians feature across five Romaniacs classes

Thirteen Australians were listed across five categories at the 2026 Red Bull Romaniacs, with Sandon Kerswell’s Silver victory providing the headline result.

Robert Nowak finished seventh in Adventure Ultimate, Adam Riemann brought the BMW F 900 GS home in 16th, and Tim Darmanin placed 13th in the inaugural Adventure Core category. Darmanin missed 12th position by only five seconds after more than 14 hours of competition.

Alan Bute finished 50th in Iron, while Imrie Wallis led the Australian Bronze contingent in 44th. Glenn Toner was 64th, Tim Gibson 72nd, Jack Pearce 111th and Brenden Murphy 157th. Jason Williams appeared in 189th but carried disqualification notations for all four Offroad Days.

CFMOTO completes three-class Adventure sweep

CFMOTO emerged from Red Bull Romaniacs with victories in all three multi-cylinder Adventure categories.

Mario Roman claimed Adventure Ultimate aboard a modified CFMOTO 450MT, Rene Columna won the new Adventure Core category for CFMOTO Boxer Racing, and Chinese rider Guishu He completed the clean sweep in Adventure Lite.

Ultimate provides the most technical and enduro-like test for the large motorcycles, with rocks, roots, demanding singletrack and severe climbs. Core bridges the gap with a mixture of technical terrain and more flowing trails, while Lite places greater emphasis on faster forest roads and gravel tracks without turning the event into an easy trail ride.

Roman defeated Pol Tarrés by 14 minutes and 40 seconds in Ultimate, Columna beat Dakar winner Sam Sunderland by 11 minutes and 42 seconds in Core, and He won Lite by more than half an hour.

Jarvis takes electric bike to Romaniacs Gold finish

Graham Jarvis added another chapter to his remarkable Red Bull Romaniacs career by becoming the first competitor to tackle the event’s toughest class on an electric motorcycle.

The seven-time winner completed the Gold contest aboard the Jarv-E and was classified 20th overall after the Prologue and four Offroad Days.

Stark’s electric HEWC challenge heads home to Sweden

The FIM Hard Enduro World Championship resumes at Forza Orza in Orsa on August 20–22, when Sweden hosts a round of the series for the first time. Manuel Lettenbichler won the opening rounds at Alestrem in France and Extreme XL Lagares in Portugal, before Mitch Brightmore broke through at the Silver Kings Hard Enduro in Idaho.

After three of eight rounds, Lettenbichler leads the championship on 88 points, ahead of Brightmore on 75 and Teodor Kabakchiev on 68. Ashton Brightmore, Mario Roman and Billy Bolt form the next chasing group, but Sweden could prove pivotal as the season enters its second half.

The home round will also place an even brighter spotlight on Stark Future’s battery-powered challenge. Swedish rider Eddie Karlsson sits seventh in the championship on 31 points, while Stark team-mate Toby Martyn is 13th on 16. Karlsson was classified eighth at Silver Kings as the leading electric rider, continuing to demonstrate that the VARG EX can score genuine world championship points against the established combustion machinery.

Toby Martyn and Eddie Karlsson showed podium pace indoors on the Stark, and that speed is slowly translating to the forest.

Karlsson had already made history at the non-championship 2026 Erzbergrodeo, finishing ninth to become the first electric motorcycle rider to conquer the Iron Giant. Remarkably, he completed almost the entire race without a functioning rear brake, while Martyn brought the second Stark home in 12th following a crash and running repairs. Stark also secured the Manufacturers’ Award in the indoor 2025–26 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship, where Karlsson and Martyn finished fourth and fifth overall.

The VARG EX carries roughly 120 kg but can produce up to 80 horsepower from its 7.2 kWh battery pack. With no clutch or gearbox, its instant torque and rider-adjustable power delivery offer clear advantages, although managing energy consumption and negotiating clutch-dependent technical sections remain major challenges, as does the machine’s weight.

Forza Orza’s forests, rocks and endurance-focused course should provide another revealing examination. It is also a fitting stage for Karlsson and Swedish manufacturer Stark Future as their electric hard-enduro programme competes on home soil for the first time.

Kurtz takes control of Speedway GP title fight

Brady Kurtz emerged from the first FIM Speedway Grand Prix staged at Moto Arena Lodz wearing the Golden Race Jacket, with third place lifting the Australian into the World Championship lead.

Kurtz is tied with reigning champion Bartosz Zmarzlik on 109 points, but holds top spot courtesy of his two runner-up finishes this season. Robert Lambert is now only eight points behind the pair, leaving the championship finely balanced with three rounds remaining.

New Speedway GP leader Brady Kurtz

Kurtz raced for local club Orzel Lodz from 2020 to 2022, although he said the Grand Prix track bore little resemblance to the surface he encountered during league racing. He nonetheless grew stronger as the meeting progressed before completing the podium behind Lambert and Patryk Dudek.

See the full Lodz Speedway GP report, results and championship standings.

Lambert ends long wait for another Grand Prix win

Robert Lambert’s victory in Lodz was only the second Speedway GP triumph of his career and his first since winning at Vojens in September 2024.

The British rider had endured a particularly frustrating result at the previous round in Malilla, where he won all five of his heats but still missed the final. There was no such disappointment in Poland, with Lambert overcoming an imperfect fifth heat, progressing through the Last Chance Qualifier and then defeating Dudek, Kurtz and Michael Jepsen Jensen in the decider.

1) Robert Lambert, 2) Patryk Dudek, 3) Brady Kurtz – SpeedwayGP of Poland – Lodz

Lambert described the breakthrough as feeling like his first victory all over again. More importantly, it has transformed the championship into a genuine three-rider contest, with Lambert now on 101 points and within striking distance of Kurtz and Zmarzlik.

Zmarzlik’s remarkable final streak comes to an end

Bartosz Zmarzlik’s run of 14 consecutive Speedway GP final appearances ended at Lodz when the reigning World Champion finished second behind Michael Jepsen Jensen in LCQ1.

It was the first time Zmarzlik had failed to reach a Grand Prix final since Warsaw in May 2025. His 11-point haul was enough to keep him level with Kurtz at the head of the standings, but the Australian now holds the championship lead on countback.

With Lambert also closing rapidly, just eight points cover the leading three riders heading into the final rounds at Riga, Vojens and Torun.

Bailey still firmly in the SGP2 medal hunt

Australian Beau Bailey remains firmly in contention for an FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship medal after reaching a dramatic SGP2 final at Lodz.

Bailey fell at the opening turn during the first attempt to run the final and brought down Denmark’s Nicolai Heiselberg, who was unable to contest the restart. Polish teenager Maksymilian Pawelczak then crashed during the second attempt, leaving Mikkel Andersen as the last rider standing and the round winner.

Bailey was classified fourth and collected 14 championship points, moving him to 23 overall. He sits only one point behind third-placed Villads Nagel and is tied with William Drejer and Slater Lightcap ahead of the Vojens finale.

Our complete Lodz coverage also includes the SGP2 results and championship standings.

Andersen takes command of SGP2 championship

Mikkel Andersen’s Lodz victory gave the Danish youngster a commanding advantage heading into the final SGP2 round on home soil at Vojens.

Andersen’s night initially looked unlikely to end on the top step after he finished third in each of his opening two heats. A switch to his spare motorcycle transformed his fortunes, allowing him to reach the final and capitalise on the drama that removed Bailey, Heiselberg and Pawelczak.

Following his second place at the opening round in Malilla, Andersen now leads Pawelczak by 10 points. Scoring 11 championship points at Vojens would guarantee Denmark its first FIM Speedway Under-21 World Champion since Michael Jepsen Jensen claimed the crown in 2012.

Herlings makes Lommel look almost straightforward

Lommel normally exposes every physical, technical and mechanical weakness, but Jeffrey Herlings made one of the world’s toughest motocross tracks look easy.

Jeffrey Herlings leads

Herlings won Saturday’s Qualifying Race and then led every lap of both Sunday motos. His winning margins were 45.474 seconds and 39.633 seconds, giving him a combined advantage of more than 85 seconds over his nearest rival across race day.

The perfect 1-1-1 weekend delivered the 120th Grand Prix victory of Herlings’ career and his eighth overall win of the 2026 season. With Lucas Coenen unable to race at Lommel, Herlings left Belgium with 675 points and a commanding 104-point championship lead over Romain Febvre.

McLellan’s title push gathers momentum

Camden McLellan matched Herlings with a perfect 1-1-1 weekend of his own in MX2, but the South African had to work considerably harder for his opening-moto victory.

Camden McLellan

McLellan completed the first lap of Race One in ninth before steadily cutting through the field. He moved into second on lap nine and took over the lead on lap 12 before pulling clear of Simon Längenfelder. Race Two featured three different leaders, with Guillem Farres and Längenfelder both taking turns at the front before McLellan assumed control on lap 11.

It was the first 1-1 Grand Prix result of McLellan’s career and moved him to 608 championship points. He is now only 13 points behind second-placed Sacha Coenen and 60 behind Farres, while McLellan and Farres also delivered a Triumph one-two overall at Lommel.

Febvre’s podium disappears in the final half-lap

Romain Febvre looked set to salvage an important second place from the final MXGP moto after producing his best start for several rounds and riding clear of the chasing pack.

Romain Febvre

With just over a lap remaining, however, Febvre struck a soft patch in the wave section and was thrown over the handlebars. He remounted with enough of a margin to retain second, only for his Kawasaki to stop during the final half-lap. Febvre was eventually classified 13th.

The Frenchman still moved into second in the World Championship after finishing fourth in Race One, but the manner in which the second moto unravelled cost him a valuable haul of points at a time when Herlings was already disappearing over the championship horizon.

Van Drunen adds another MX2 point

Two-time WMX World Champion Lotte van Drunen again stepped into the MX2 World Championship field as a wildcard at Lommel, taking on the men at arguably the most physically demanding venue on the calendar.

Van Drunen finished 20th in Race One to collect a World Championship point, completing 16 of the 17 laps. Her second moto ended during the opening stages, and she was classified 25th, leaving her 22nd overall for the weekend.

There was no headline result, but scoring against the MX2 field in Lommel was another noteworthy cross-class performance from the 18-year-old Dutch rider.

Cannon’s EMX250 title campaign takes a hit

Australian Jake Cannon endured a difficult ninth round of the EMX250 European Championship after entering Lommel as Francisco Garcia’s closest championship challenger.

Jake Cannon

Cannon retired from Race One after two falls, then made a strong start in the second moto and recovered as high as eighth. Two more late crashes dropped the Kawasaki rider to 11th at the finish.

Nicolai Skovbjerg capitalised with a 1-2 scorecard and the overall victory, while Billy Askew claimed his maiden EMX250 race win in the second outing. Garcia missed the round following a minor training injury, but still leads with 352 points. Skovbjerg has moved to second on 278, with Cannon third on 258 and three rounds remaining.

Haavisto takes the EMXOpen crown with a clean sweep

The entire 2026 EMXOpen European Championship was decided across two races at Lommel, with Finland’s Jere Haavisto mastering the deep sand to complete a perfect 1-1 weekend.

Damien Knuiman led early in both races but was eventually overhauled by Haavisto each time. Knuiman’s pair of runner-up finishes secured second in the championship, while Peter Koenig completed the overall podium.

Ducati-supported Spaniard Victor Alonso also finished the weekend strongly, passing Koenig and Albin Gerhardsson on his way to third in Race Two and tenth overall.

Belgium names Coenen brothers and Everts for Ernée

Team Belgium has confirmed a formidable three-rider squad for the 2026 FIM Motocross of Nations at Ernée in France, with Lucas Coenen selected for MXGP, twin brother Sacha Coenen in MX2 and Liam Everts contesting the Open category.

Lucas Coenen

National team manager Joël Smets has opted for a young but already highly experienced Grand Prix combination. Lucas has established himself as an MXGP title contender, Sacha is firmly involved in the MX2 championship battle, and Everts has represented Belgium on several previous occasions.

The selection also places two of Belgium’s fastest young riders alongside a third-generation member of the Everts dynasty. All three are accustomed to racing at the front of the World Championship, although the Nations format will again reward consistency across all six rider results rather than individual race speed alone.

The 2026 Motocross of Nations will be staged at Ernée from October 2-4.

Brazil confirms experienced MXoN line-up

Brazil has named Fábio Santos, Salvador Perez and Enzo Lopes for the 2026 FIM Motocross of Nations at Ernée, with the three riders selected through the technical criteria introduced by the Brazilian Motorcycling Confederation earlier this year.

Santos will ride a Yamaha in the MXGP category and is preparing for his ninth Motocross of Nations appearance, extending his record as Brazil’s most frequently selected MXoN rider. Lopes will race a Honda in the Open class at what will be his fifth Nations appearance.

The MX2 position has gone to 18-year-old Salvador Perez, who currently leads the Brazilian MX2 Championship. Perez was not part of the initial squad because of a policy limiting the team to two riders from any one manufacturer, but moved into the final line-up following an injury to Bernardo Tiburcio.

Lopes currently leads Brazil’s MX1 standings, while Santos is the highest-ranked Brazilian behind him. Former Brazilian MX2 Champion Guilherme Bresolin has been appointed as reserve rider.

Husqvarna secures Nestaan and de Wolf for the future

Husqvarna Factory Racing has reinforced its long-term commitment to the Motocross World Championship by signing new multi-year agreements with both the Nestaan organisation and 2024 MX2 World Champion Kay de Wolf.

De Wolf joined Husqvarna’s development programme as a 13-year-old eight years ago and has progressed through the same structure to become a World Champion and MXGP front-runner. His renewed deal continues one of the longest current rider-team relationships in the Grand Prix paddock.

Husqvarna secures Nestaan and de Wolf for the future, as well as Everts

Nestaan has operated Husqvarna’s official factory motocross programme since 2020. The partnership reached its high point in 2024, when Husqvarna claimed the MX2 riders’ and manufacturers’ championships, won 16 of the 20 Grands Prix and finished first and second in the final rider standings.

The renewed programme will continue with de Wolf in MXGP and Liam Everts in MX2, with Everts already contracted through the 2027 season. De Wolf marked the announcement weekend with second place in both MXGP motos at Lommel, securing runner-up overall behind Jeffrey Herlings.
