MCNEWS.COM.AU - The ultimate in motorcycle news

Motorex KTM rider, Ryan Marmont (KTM 250 SX) has taken his first national motocross title after winning the final round of the Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship at the Nokia MX Nationals at Coolum Motocross Track today.

Marmont and No Fear Honda’s, Craig Anderson (CRF450) were each presented with a Gold dipped helmet after each rider won the 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship and 2006 Nokia MX Nationals respectively.

Last weekend, Anderson won the Nokia MX Nationals at Newcastle after finishing the penultimate round of the premier motocross series with an unbeatable advantage of 53 points. Anderson was unable to compete this weekend due to a thumb injury sustained in a practice incident three weeks ago which has required ongoing medical attention.

With Anderson and 2005 Series Champion, Daryl Hurley (RM-Z450) both out due to injury, Queensland’s Daniel Reardon (KX450F) won both motos in the final round of the Nokia MX Nationals. The round victory ensured that the Kawasaki Racing rider took second in the championship point score with 372 points, two behind Anderson.

In just his first year of making the step up to the senior Pro Open category, Reardon has confirmed that he is a future Australian motocross champion with the 20-year-old winning the last five motos of the Nokia MX Nationals. Today’s round victory was Reardon’s second in a row.

Third overall in the 2006 Nokia MX Nationals was No Fear Honda’s, Cody Cooper (CRF450) who despite failing to finish both motos of the round was able to finish the ten round series, 60 points behind Reardon.

With Reardon dominating the competition, it was up to three time Australian Motocross Championship winner, Darryll King (YZ450F) to take the fight to the Kawasaki rider by finishing third and second in the final two motos. It was King’s last competition in the Nokia MX Nationals with the New Zealander deciding to hang up his helmet and focus on his own projects across the Tasman.

Cheyne Boyd (YZ450F) finished off a successful day for the CDR/Nokia/Yamaha operation by finishing in third position overall after recording a fourth and third in the two motos of the round.

Last year’s Pro Lites winner, Cameron Taylor (YZ250F) was unable to catch Marmont for the series crown, with the Serco Yamaha rider taking second with 367 points, 47 behind the new champion. Third overall was Troy Dorron who was a further 58 points behind Taylor.

Marmont was able to finish the year on a high by taking victory in both motos. Second for the day was young Serco Yamaha rider, Jake Moss who finished third and second, with Taylor rounding out the top three for the round after he was placed second and fifth.

It was a dramatic conclusion to the inaugural YMF Loan Australian Women’s Championship, with first round winner, Kristy Gillespie pushing her bike across the finish line after a mechanical problem forced her to finish the race in 18th position.

Prior to the mechanical problem, Gillespie had won every single race of the newly incepted championship, which strives to showcase the talented female riders within in the Australian motocross industry. The young rider from Wodonga finished the series in third position overall.

New Zealand’s Emma Davis will go down in the history books as being the first winner of the YMF Loan Australian Women’s Championship, Davis finished second overall today after recording two seconds and a third in the second and final round of the series.

Round winner, Adelia Barton was runner up in the YMF Loan Australian Women’s Championship after coming third, second and first in today’s two races.

In the 2006 Motul National Cup, Tom Ovens capped off a consistent year by winning the development series for riders wishing to make the step from amateur to professional status. Second overall was Victorian, Jarrod Long and Lawson Bopping rounded out the top three for the season.

With Ovens winning the series, Bopping came to the fore of the competition by taking the round victory by coming second and third in the two motos, second overall was Joel Bellchambers with Lawson Bopping rounding out the top three.

Kym Wright also finished the year on a high by winning the first moto ahead of Bellchambers and Bopping. The final race was won by Bopping followed by Ovens and Bellchambers.

Promoter of the Nokia MX Nationals, Kevin Williams said that the racing at Coolum topped off a fantastic year for the motocross competition.

“The racing today was fantastic and it was great to officially crown the winners of each championship,” Williams said.

“A number of people braved the showers that occurred at Coolum today with a strong crowd watching the on track battles.”

“It been an excellent year for the Nokia MX Nationals, with the racing on track the best it’s been for a long time and a number of off-track activities adding to the professionalism of the series.”

Craig Anderson – Winner, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals
“It been a trying time - with injury last year and coming back from the US I had placed huge expectations on myself last year to go out and win races. This year, the competition was great and if Hurley didn’t get hurt the championship would have been decided by the results in the last race.”

“Thanks to Katrina and Tatum for just everything – they are sort of the backbone of this operation and No Fear Honda who have put together a great motorcycle for me throughout the year.”

Daniel Reardon- Second, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals
“Definitely standing there at riders briefing at the first round of the series I didn’t expect to be in this position at the end of the year – it was something that I always wanted and was always at the back of my mind – I thought a podium would be great but second is unreal.”

“I would like to thank Kawasaki Racing those guys do an awesome job, Rossco, Charlie my mechanic, my practice mechanic Wardy, all those guys play such a big part in my life and career and it is really important to have those guys there.”

Cody Cooper - Third, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals
“I had bike problems in both motos today and unfortunately recorded a DNF in both of them. My starts were good and it certainly made it easier for the start of the races.”

“My goal was to get on the podium at the end of the year and I have managed to achieve that – I would like to thank all the other guys for the good races which have been contested throughout the year.”

Ryan Marmont - Winner, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship
“It’s been a long series, I’ve pretty much had these guys biting at my tail and when I lost the lead halfway through the championship due to flat tyre and it took a bit of pressure off me and I was able to turn it all around and managed to be consistent to maintain my points lead.”

“I got second last year, it is great to win a National Motocross Competition – it is certainly not something which I will forget in a hurry.”

Cameron Taylor - Second, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship
“The very first race of the year I didn’t finish due to exhaust failure so it was obviously a shocking start and I played catch up from then on. I got reasonably close to the lead mid series but Ryan [Marmont] really put it together during the last part of the series and showed he disserved that number one plate.”

“Runner up is still a good spot to be on podium. But I’m just going to remind Doggy that the number one plate is on loan and hopefully I can get it back next year.”

Troy Dorron - Third, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship
“I had a few bike dramas today and two DNF’s were definitely not the way I wanted to finish the series, the bike stopped in both motos.”

“I’m pretty excited with third overall, the plan was to get second if I could as I knew first was out of range. I found a bit of speed from last year and I was happy about that. I guess it hurt me the Toowoomba round which I did not get any points, but everybody has their hard luck stories. It is good to get on the podium, and I would love to be back next year and try and get that Gold Helmet.”

Emma Davis - Winner, 2006 YMF Loan Women’s Championship
“I’m pretty stoked with this achievement. We came over [from New Zealand] with the full package and bad luck to Kristy who did a great job throughout the series. My team and mechanic worked well and we were able to take the title.”

“I came out [to Australia] because there are a lot more faster riders and it is held pretty highly to win an Australian title. All the New Zealand Women Nationals start in August, and I encourage Australian girls to come over and mix it up with us. That will be my next focus.”

Adelia Barton - Second, 2006 YMF Loan Women’s Championship
“Under different circumstances I would feel better about my position in the championship – it is a little disappointing as Kristy [Gillespie] was unable to finish the last race. Hopefully there will be more rounds next year which would make the competition awesome.”

“My Suzuki has been unreal and it managed to stay strong in tough track conditions. The club has done a fantastic job preparing the track.”

Kristy Gillespie – Third, 2006 YMF Loan Women’s Championship
“I don’t know what happened in the last moto. The bike died about five times and then I’d get it going again. On the last lap I was over the table top when it stopped again and I ended up pushing it over the line.”

“It is really good to be recognised with a Women’s Championship and finally get the same status as the guys. Hopefully next year get a few more rounds for us all to compete in. “

Tom Ovens – Winner, 2006 Motul National Cup
“It’s awesome to win the series. I came into the year hoping for a top five and to win is excellent.”

“I have been working full time this year and I have made sure that when I train I put in 100 percent into it and I think it has made everything better.”

Jarrod Long - Second, 2006 Motul National Cup
“It is awesome to finish second in the championship. The support I’ve got from my family, friends and Williams’ has given me good insight into racing at this elite level of the sport.”

“From the first round things have been unbelievable and to the take the second race win at Gillman was excellent and I feel as thought I have been riding good all year.”

Lawson Bopping - Third, 2006 Motul National Cup
“It’s pretty good to finish third in the National Cup. It could have been better by finishing higher on the podium but overall I am happy.”

“At the start of the season, I just struggled a bit and started getting results from Geelong and after that I just tried to be consistent to get more points.”

Daniel Reardon - Winner, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals, Round Ten
“This round was awesome, I now have five moto wins under my belt, which is really good, when the track was really tough. The competition is now at a point where you sit on the start line it is hard to know how you are going to go.”

“I now have more confidence for sure - once you get your first moto win then you think you can do it again. I will certainly carry the confidence for supercross.”

Darryll King - Second, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals, Round Ten
“I felt really sharp on the pike today. It was fantastic to perform at the front of the field and get a podium for Yamaha.”

“I almost wish I had of felt this good at round one of the series, but I’ve had a lot of fun throughout the year.”

Cheyne Boyd - Third 2006, Nokia MX Nationals, Round Ten
“I am happy to finish the season a lot better than when I first started - my speed has definitely picked up over the last three rounds.”

“I am a little disappointed with today’s effort. I made my way to second in the first moto and hit a wall and went backwards after that. In the second moto I crashed all by myself, but that’s motocross and the good thing about it was that I didn’t get hurt.”

Ryan Marmont - Winner, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship, Round Ten
“I didn’t have a good qualifying time today with the track being so sloppy. But I managed to get a good start in the first moto and I knew I had some good speed, and managed to win the first moto comfortably. I was in second at the start of moto two behind Jake Moss, he had a hot speed and he gave me the lead easy when he fell. It made my job a bit easier and basically I tried to pick good lines.”

“Each time we come to the Coolum Club it gets better and better. My hat goes off to them and I am looking forward to coming back next year.”

Jake Moss - Second, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship Round Ten
“It was awesome to finish on the podium again today.”

“We now need to focus on stepping up to another level of motocross for next year and running with the front runners consistently. I look forward to being a leader in the field in 2007.”

Cameron Taylor - Third, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship, Round Ten
“I got a good start in the first moto and worked way to second, by the time I was placed there Ryan had a good lead – he rode well. In the second moto I didn’t get as good a start and worked my way to fifth. It was extremely difficult as the clutch starting going in my bike and I threw my goggles off so the last ten minutes pretty tough. I had my eyes set on third and those few dramas set me back a bit.”

“After the first moto, I was hoping for the win as it would have been the best way to go out of series. But third is better than fourth and it was consistent result for me to go home with and come back next year with even more determination to win.”
