| WAs top riders
hit the track on Sunday April 9 for the opening round of the States motorcycle road
racing championships. The 5 round series caters for the state title classes of Superbikes and Production Superbikes, 600 Supersports, 250 Production and Sidecars plus supporting events for 125GPs, 250GPs and the hotly contested C and D Grade Series. Heading the charge for state title honors will be WAs Superbike champion Scott Tulk riding a 900 Honda in the Shell Advance Superbike class. Scott this season could have some tough opposition from not only the superbikes of Stuart Adams (Yamaha 750), John Donohoe (Yamaha1000) and Gordon Prokscha (Bimota 1100) but also the 600cc Dunlop Supersport class riders. An impressive line up is entered on 600s for both the Superbike and Supersport Championships. New South Welshman Daniel Stauffer heads the list on a YZF600 sponsored by WA based Aark Racing/Causeway Yamaha Team. Daniels in hot form following a recent top three finish in the opening round of the national Shell Advance Championships at Oran Park early March. Stauffer surprised many in the super competitive field of Supersport racing, finishing just behind reigning Australian champion Kevin Curtain, then Jason Kain, with a number of top riders behind him, including Robbie Baird, Steve Martin, Adam Fergusson, Chad Turnbull and Kim Ashkenazi. Stauffer has a background of Dirt track racing including 13 Australian Titles, including taking out the 250cc Production Championship in 1998. Kiwi rider Rodney Knapp, whos lapping quicker each time he hits the track (a 61.48 at the recent Kings of Wanneroo meeting). Also riding a YZF 600 Yamaha , Rodneys previous racing abilities are coming to the fore. Ex British Supersport Champion in 1989 Knapp has years of experience to draw on since his retirement from competitive racing in 94. WAs charge will be lead by the 1999 Supersport State Champion Sam Reynolds of Wanneroo riding for Lloyd Chapman Motorcycles on a GSXR600 and lapping in the low 61s also at the recent Kings meeting. Cullys Castrol Yamahas Strett Cull and Michael Quante aboard the ex Adrian Clutterbuck Kawasaki 600 should also bring pressure to bear in the top 5 placings. Strong fields of 250cc Production bikes also support the big bore bikes. A great breeding ground for champions. With last years championship winner, Barry Depassey moving over to the Supersport class, the 250s class is wide open. Seasoned campaigner Peter White riding a new Aprilia heads the list, with Darren Peach, the fast improving Stewart Landers, maybe will feel the pressure from newcomers Glenn Newnham, Danny Abrey and nineteen year old Andrew Davey. Sidecars also feature on the programme with the Motorcycle Movers State Title wide open this year with the retirement of two times state and national champions Lindsay Fagan and Geoff Rous. Graeme Studd and passenger Ian Girvan return to three wheels aboard an 1000 Kawasaki. Another Wanneroo resident should prove a threat - Murray Stronach (and passenger Brad Davey who also competes on a 1000cc Solo on the day) returns to four stroke racing aboard his newly completed 1200cc Suzuki powered LCR, ready to reclaim another state title. Practice starts 9am to 11am and the first race at 12 noon. |
