Daniel Reardon (KX450F) secured his first Pro Open victory at the second round of the Nokia MX Nationals at Gillman today, with defending champion, Cameron Taylor (YZF 250) bouncing back from a disastrous start to the series by winning the Pro Lites.

However, Reardon’s impressive Kawasaki Racing package was not enough to stop Team Shift Motul Suzuki’s Daryl Hurley (RMZ450) who was presented with the coveted red number plate for the series leader for the second round in a row.

Hurley now leads the Nokia MX Nationals with ninety-one points to his name after securing second overall at Gillman today. Third for the event was No Fear Honda rider, Craig Anderson (CRF450) who has moved up four championship positions to trail Hurley by twenty-four points.

Cody Cooper (CRF450) also looked strong after crossing the finish line first in moto one. However, Cooper was unable to finish the second race and therefore did not record any valuable championship points. Reardon finished race one in second with Anderson in third.

In moto two, Hurley displayed the same dominance as seen at the first round of the Nokia MX Nationals at Wanneroo Park and forged a demanding lead over Reardon and Anderson with the two later competitors finishing in the same positions as the previous race.

In the Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites, Serco Yamaha rider, Taylor showed the field that he is out to win back-to-back titles in the series and silenced any of his critics by claming the round victory after crossing the finish line in first and third in today’s two motos.

Second overall was Kawasaki Racing’s Cody Mackie (KX250F) who gave team owner, Brett Whale something to smile about after the pair’s hire car was stolen from their motel overnight. Mackie secured his best Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites round result after coming second and seventh in today’s two races.

Troy Dorron (CRF 250R) rounded out the top three for the weekend, after finishing the first race in fourth and crossing the line behind moto two winner, Mitch Hoad (KX250F).

Ryan Marmont (KTM 250 SXF) will be the man to beat at the next round of the Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship, with the Motorex KTM rider presented the red number plate for the series leader at today’s podium presentation. Marmont has a twelve point series lead, with Dorron and Taylor rounding out the top three overall.

Round two of the Nokia MX Nationals also marked the start of the 2006 Motul National Cup, with thirty-nine competitors lining up for the class which is especially designed to showcase the talent of riders who are knocking on the door of the professional ranks.

Geelong based rider, Tom Ovens (CRF250), opened the year as the man to be chased in the development class after he sealed the round victory by finishing first and third in today’s two motos. Five points in arrears on forty points is pole position winner, Mark Grove (CRF250) who put on a stunning performance to finish fourth and second respectively in the two races.

Jarrod Long (YZ250) showed that he is a future force in Australian motocross with the Victorian finishing third overall on his National Cup debut. Long won the final moto for the class at the Gillman circuit.

Approximately, 1,800 people attended today’s second round of the Nokia MX National at Gillman with Series Promoter, Kevin Williams satisfied with the turn out.

“Considering their was a major AFL match in the area today as well, it is great that so many people choose to watch motocross instead,” Williams said.

“The action on track was fantastic and I know myself and the competitors can’t wait until round three at Wonthaggi at the end of the month.”

Competitors in the Nokia MX Nationals and Maxxis Tyres Pro Lite Championship will now take a well earned break and return to racing on Sunday 30 April for the first Victorian round of the series at Wonthaggi. The next round of the Motul National Cup will take place at Conondale the following weekend.

Daniel Reardon - Nokia MX Nationals Pro Open Round Two Winner - “I’m the new kid on the block, with a new team and a new bike. However, things are certainly starting to come together now and the round victory is evidence of that.

“I’ve done a lot of testing in the off season and the bike is strong, it is just up to me to get that little bit stronger.

“I’ve employed a practice mechanic who does all the tinkering on the bike through the week which leaves me to do more riding and training, which I think made the difference today. I’m still learning and it’s been a tough start, but now all the hard work is paying off.”

Daryl Hurley - Nokia MX Nationals Pro Open Round Two Runner Up - “I struggled a bit with the hard pack today as we have done a lot of sand testing in the last few weeks. However, it was the same for everybody out there and this circuit [Gillman] tends to get harder and harder each year.

“It’s not going to be easy next round of the series at Wonthaggi as Craig [Anderson] beat me there last year, but I am aiming for consistent results throughout the year and if we can achieve another podium it will be fantastic. We’re all here for the number one plate and hopefully I can hang onto it for the rest of the year through maintaining my focus.”

Craig Anderson - Nokia MX Nations Round Two Third Position - “My shoulder is definitely getting better after the big accident at the Supercross three weeks ago when I nearly killed myself. It’s now just up to me to get better and stronger.

“I like all the tracks in the series and Wonthaggi is definitely one of the toughest. Everybody in the team is working hard and hopefully we can put it all together on the day.”

Cameron Taylor – Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Round Two Winner - “I got a great start to the first race and an average start in the second, however I still managed to come through and do what I had to do which ensured I won the round.

“I’m feeling really confident for next round. Wonthaggi was the first track I rode on twenty years ago and I managed to cut the points deficient from last round in half today, which sets me up in a good position for round four.”

Cody Mackie - Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Round Two Runner Up - “It feels good to be on the podium. I always thought that I could do it and now I feel as though I’ve created a pattern and I’ve got the bike working as I want it. Today’s result is pay back for the team who have worked so hard to get me here.

“They say once you’ve been up here [podium] it gets easier every other time and you carry a bit more confidence with you and I know I’ll be doing that next round.”

Troy Dorron - Maxxis Pro Lites Round Two Third Position - “Today was an up-and-down day and I didn’t get the start I wanted in the first moto however it has all finished off good at the end of the event.

“I won’t be doing too much different in the preparation for next round. I will be trying to ride a few similar tracks to Wonthaggi and put in the ground work which will hopefully see us on the podium again in a few weeks time.”

Ryan Marmont – Red Plate Holder – Following Two Rounds - “It feels pretty good to take the championship lead after two rounds and now I will be trying my best to stay at the top of the point score for the rest of the year.

“The team and I have put in the biggest effort in the lead up to the first two rounds of the series and we will be continuing the hard work for the next round of the championship at Wonthaggi.”
