Perfect clear skies and brilliant sunshine was the order for Easter Sunday at Mt. Panorama on the weekend, where up to 90 bikes took on the famous circuit for The Supermoto KTM Cup, incorporating the NSW Supermoto Championship.

Combining pavement road racing with motocross style dirt track racing, Supermoto riding comprises three major divisions, the S1 class for machines over 450cc, the premier S2 class for machines up to 450cc, and the Veterans class with unlimited engine capacity for riders over 35 years.

Motorex KTM factory pilot and local rider, Stuart Bennett from Orange, was the favourite for the premier S2 class, and showed fans why he holds down numerous Australian championship titles.

Bennett’s day started out with sheer dominance as he blitzed the field in his first two S2 motos. His winning streak seemed unstoppable, until his third moto where he slid out on the first corner, with other riders following suit to collide with his KTM450SMR.

The pile up saw Bennett finish at the back of the pack, resulting in a challenging grid position of 15th for his fourth and final S2 moto.

“The rules for the NSW Championship state that the grid position from your previous moto is where you start your next race, so I knew then that the outright win was going to be almost impossible,” said Bennett.

“I managed to work my way back from 15th grid position to 5th in the race, which gave me enough points to finish 2nd outright for the day. I’m pleased with second but disappointed that an entire NSW Championship was decided with one day of racing.”

The S2 class NSW Championship title went to Troy Herfoss, accumulating 75 points, with a three point lead over Stuart Bennett on 72 points in second. Third went to Ken Bisley on 71 points.

Also waving the flag for Motorex KTM Factory Team, was Baulkham Hills resident, Rob Twyerould who continued to dominate his unbeatable performance on the KTM525 taking the win in the Veterans Class, followed with a 3rd place podium in the S1 class and a 3rd place podium in the KTM Sprint.

“When you ride for the love of the sport versus the competition alone, any podium finish is always rewarding,” said Twyerould.

“I don’t ride full time professionally but I do try and get out there as much as I can when it doesn’t conflict with my fulltime job as Motorex KTM Racing Teams’ Manager and Head Technician.

“Working for KTM has its advantages…I have built an awesome KTM525 Supermoto bike. It’s a weapon out on the race track, and it’s a bike that anyone interested in the sport can build.”

The grand finale for the day was the Supermoto KTM Sprint. The 10 fastest riders from the S1 and S2 class automatically gained entry for this open all out battle. The final podium results saw S2 class winner Troy Herfoss dominate in 1st, followed by S1 class entries Josh McFarlane in 2nd and Rob Twyerould in 3rd.
